Description: Job DescriptionNYC Department of Finance (DOF) is responsible for administering the tax revenue laws of the city fairly, efficiently, and transparently to instill public confidence and encourage compliance while providing exceptional customer service.The Legal Affairs Division serves as the in-house legal department for DOF, providing professional and comprehensive legal advice and services supporting a full range of city tax and other revenue-related matters. Legal Affairs Division attorneys and staff handle various legal issues, including real property taxes and exemptions, business income and excise taxes, collections, parking violations, treasury, land registry, Conciliation Bureau conferences, FOIL, and employment law.The Parking Law Unit handles a full range of parking-related matters including handling parking law, parking administration and adjudication issues, prosecuting parking fraud reinstatement and broker compliance cases, drafting and reviewing parking related legislation and rules, advising operating divisions, supporting the City’s Law Department on litigation matters, resolving legal issues arising from booting or towing vehicles, and preparing and signing collection and enforcement legal documents.The Parking Law Unit seeks an enthusiastic, self-motivated attorney intern to be part of our team handling a variety of parking law and enforcement related legal matters. Under close supervision and direction, the candidate will work on a range of legal matters and projects that may include:– Perform parking law, enforcement and administration related legal research and draft memoranda, legal responses, policy statements and other documents.
– Perform legal work involving issues of fact and questions of law, including parking law, NYC Administrative Code, NYS Civil Practice Law and Rules, and NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law.
– Assist in reviewing, analyzing and learning to draft State and local legislation, policies, and agency rules, forms and communications.
– Assist in providing legal counsel to the agency’s operational staff and serve as liaison with operational staff on matters being handled by the unit and by the New York City Law Department.
– Participate in division and agency projects and assist with reports.
– Research and draft responses to claims or actions filed against the agency as needed. Under direction, serve as liaison with the Law Department on agency litigation matters.
– Prepare petitions or cases for administrative matters and hearings, such as parking fraud reinstatement cases, broker sanctions or other areas as needed.
– Participate in projects and handling matters in other areas as determined by the General Counsel or Division manager.Additional Information:
