Description: Assume direct responsibility under the leadership of the principal for the organization, administration, and operation of all aspects of the choir program at assigned schools.QUALIFICATIONS:Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Valid Texas Teaching Certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of choral music education and instruction
  • Strong communications, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

  • High School Position: Three years secondary experience preferred
  • Middle School Position: None required

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:Instructional Management * Participate in UIL Concert & Sight-Reading and Solo & Ensemble Contest.

  • Encourage and maintain a high percentage of individual participants in UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest and TMEA All-Region Tryouts.
  • Encourage and schedule time for individual student requests for help either before school, during the school day, or after scheduled activities.
  • Assist students in their selection of appropriate Solo & Ensemble pieces. Work (Extra-curricular) with students on their Solo & Ensemble selections beginning after All-Region tryouts.
  • Prepare organization(s) and individual students for competition in order to maintain reasonable success rates.
  • Develop a grading system based on objective criteria; announce the first of school.
  • Recognize the importance of private study to overall program success. Organize and encourage student participation.
  • Recognize the importance of section rehearsals to overall program success. Establish and maintain a regular schedule of section rehearsals beginning after UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest until the week of UIL Concert & Sight Reading Contest.
  • Use program outcomes for corrective action, improvement, and recognition of success.
  • Maintain awareness of all UIL rules, dates, deadlines, and forms that affect the choir program.
  • Responsible for instruction at all levels of the choir program at assigned school.
  • Participate in Regional music planning meetings.
  • Make an effort to attend choral activities at feeder schools.

School/Organizational Climate * Follow all School Board policies and campus guidelines.

  • Recruit and maintain enrollment adequate for program to achieve success.
  • Display an open and receptive attitude toward all staff members.
  • Employ effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate high expectations and high regard for community/district/schools/staff/students in an enabling, nonthreatening way.
  • Provide a two-way communication channel with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community.
  • Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution with administrators, parents, teachers, staff, and community.
  • Respond appropriately to situations that could impair the teaching/learning process or could threaten safety and the well being of students and staff.
  • Respect the right of others to express their opinions.

School/Organizational Improvement * Determine and build a long range plan for choir program Improvement.

  • Assess and respond to needs related to one’s job responsibilities.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (contest results, etc.), including individual student data, to examine and improve program effectiveness.
  • Develop, maintain, and utilize appropriate information filing systems and necessary records.

Personnel Management * Recognize and reinforce student and staff excellence.

  • Delegate duties, responsibilities, and functions effectively.
  • Demonstrate skill in working with other BISD choral directors.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities * Submit district reports and requests for information/data promptly and accurately.

  • Select, recommend for purchase, distribute, and maintain all equipment under one’s supervision.
  • Maintain up-to-date inventory of equipment and uniforms.
  • Maintain up-to-date uniform checkout system for all issued uniforms.
  • Schedule activities effectively and secure resources needed to accomplish goals.
  • Participate in the systematic monitoring of the use, care, and replacement of equipment and uniforms.
  • Demonstrate responsible fiscal control over assigned budgets.
  • Manage budget funds prudently.
  • Compile reasonable budgets and cost estimates based upon documented program needs, estimated enrollment, and other fiscal years.

Student Management * Place events on school calendar as soon as they become official and notify students well in advance of activities.

  • Establish and publicize a plan for dealing with student attendance at practices and performances.
  • Recognize the value and effectively utilize the efforts of student officers in promoting the goals of the organization.
  • Arrange for transportation, feeding, and lodging of choir students when necessary.
  • Work with principal to provide for proper scheduling and assignment of students based on their individual abilities and program needs.

School/Community Relations * Promote good public relations between school and community with choir participation in community events.

  • Contribute to the cultural development of the community.

Professional Growth and Development * Set goals that reflect feedback from evaluation process.

  • Seek, accept, and respond to evaluative feedback from staff members utilizing this data to improve performance.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible; be a positive role model for all staff members.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise and evaluate the performance of other staff members assigned to assist on campus during or after school and any private teachers working with choir students.

  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing
